Create ER and Tail Sends

in

General

– Create Separate Early Reflections and Separate Tails

– Basically a Near ER, Middle ER and Far (Rear) ER via Pre Delay

– Pre Delay is Quasi the Time in between eh Initial Sound and the Start of the Delay (i.e. Early Reflections of the Delay)

– Notice that ER Reverb Unit should be the same to actually have everything in One Room, same Goes for the Tail but the Reverb Units per ER and Tail may be different (i.e. ER via Roomworks and Tail via Verb v3)

– Note that “Crossover” Feature Mimics the Ratio between High and Dull Reverb Parts (in Real World the Higher Frequencies Absorb much Quicker than Lower Frequencies and with Crossover you Adjust that)

– You Must Understand that in a Real World Environment there is First a Sound (Direct Signal) which Then Bounces to Any Given Surface (Early Reflections). Those Early Reflections are Calculated in ms and the Smaller the ms the More Far the Signal is Because at Zero ms the Signal is Basically Already at 100% Inside the Early Reflections. But when you Increase the ms Value you Create Distance between the Direct Signal and the Early Reflections thus the Direct Signal is as Close as it was Originally and the Early Reflections are Created a Couple of ms Later, usually between 15ms to 75ms (Greater Values are for Creative Purposes). E.g. a Small Bath Room has Almost No Early Reflections as the Decay Time is Very Short (Time it Takes for the Reverb to Die Off). Viceversa in a Gymnasium there are Many Early Reflections Before the Reverb Starts to Build Up.

Approx. Distances

Strings = 1.5 to 3.5 Meters (50ms-80ms)

Woodwinds, also Harps and Keys = 4 to 5 Meters (40ms-50ms)

Brass = 7 to 8 Meter (30ms-40ms)

Percussion 1 = 9 Meter (36ms)

Percussion 2 = 9.5 Meter (32ms)

Misc = 18 Meter (18ms)

Mix in ER = about 50 to 70 % (Wet/Dry)

Size in ER = about 150 to 250 (choose rather Big)

Sends are in Pre Fader Mode with 0db

Basic Workflow

Setup ER Part (Pre Delay Only)

– Remember that Pre Delay is the Amount of Time between the Original Sound (Dry Origin Signal) and the Audible Onset of the Actual Effect / Reverberation by a Plugin (or Real World of course)

1) Add 3 “Group Channel Tracks”

2) Insert a ER Only capable Hall Unit (Roomworks, Verb v3, Sonnox, IQ Reverb, Acon Reverb etc.)

3) Set all 3 Units Reverb Part to “Zero” (Smallest Value)

– Set all 3 Units Diffusion Part to “Zero” (OFF)

– Set all 3 Units Size Part to “250” (choose rather Big, i.e. Bigger Room Size = More Reflections you get)

– Set all 3 Units Mix to “50” (or 70)

4) Now Set Proper Pre Delay as for the Desired Distances

– Remember Anything Less Than 30ms Does Not Sound Separated to Our Ears, i.e. Starts to Sound as One (Viceversa when a Snare has Too Much Pre Delay the Transients can Cause a “Flare” Like Effect and to Reduce that you Simply Reduce the Pre Delay)

50 ms = 1 – 1.5 (until 2.5) Meters (Near Unit)

42 ms = 4.5 – 5 Meters (Middle Unit)

32 (-36) ms = 9 Meters (Far Unit)

5) Now Activate “Send” per Instrument (or Bus) and Put it in Pre-Fader Mode with a Send Amount of 0dB (Full)

– Strings to “Near ER”

– Winds to “Middle ER”

– Brass to “Brass ER”

Setup TAIL Part (Reverb only)

– similar to Pre Delay, but it is the Onset between the Original Sound Source and Kind a Diffused Reverb Portion of the Sound

– Note that you Do Not Want the Tail Longer than the Actual ER as you Want to Hear the Reflections Before that Tail get in (i.e. Tail “ms” is Usually at Higher Values than ER “ms”)

1) Add another 3 “Group Channel Tracks” (this Time for the Reverb Tail)

2) Insert a Hall Unit that can Disable ER Section (Roomworks, Verb v3, Sonnox, IQ Reverb etc.)

– these 3 Tail Units Do Not have to be the same Unit as the ER Unit

3) This Time make sure all 3 Units Pre Delay Part is at “Zero”

– i.e. Disable Any Pre Delay since we already have Setup 3 ER (although you can Experiment at a Later Stage and even Add some Pre Delay inside Tail Units)

– Notice that Tail Settings are more of a Personal Choice, i.e. Set Reverb Time as for the Desired Reverb Length to Personal Flavor

– Set all 3 Units Size Part to “20” (i.e. a Rather Small Room for the Tails)

– Set all 3 Units Diffusion to “100”

– Set all 3 Units Mix to “40” (or 30)

4) Put the Sends also in Pre Fader Mode with 0dB
