Tristan Murail Approach

in

– Basically it is about Analysing Sound / Overtone Series to Create Spectral Harmonies & the Way these Individual Sounds are Grouped together into globally perceived Textures and How these Textures are Shaped in Time

– He wanted to “Unfold” the “That Sound” from Moment to Moment

– For Example from Minute to Minute a New Note / Overtone is  gradually “Unfolded” via a Texture Transition (therefore these Pieces are very Long)

– Often, Spectral Music moves between a World of Pure Sound and Timbre which is perceived Globally, and a World of more Traditional Musical Textures that emphasise Groupings of Voices in Familiar Ways

– i.e. Transition between Moments with a Rich Texture by several Groups of “Spectral Listing Peaks” and Underline these Texture Patterns from Time to Time with Pure Sound / Timbre (Melodies or Broken Melodies / Chords)

– to do that, simply make 3 Voice-Groups of “Spectral Peak Listing” Notes that Fit together well (3 x 2 Notes, 3 x 3 Notes, 4 x 3 Notes etc.)

– for Example use One Overtone Series Block as “Ascents” (A, C, E, G) & a 2nd Overtone Series Block of “Descents” with Notes B, D, F

– Where “Ascents” can be more Dynamic, Louder &  “Descents” roll Back Energy to more Sparse Textures
