General
– Gati and Jathi is a Technique to Learn Polyrhythmic Ratios by Equally Subdivide the Beat (can be 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 Notes etc.)
– A Method to Perform any Ratio and Fit any Beat Value into any Space Very Simple
– Translate this Method to DAW by Defining Global Time Signature vs the Individual Patterns
– Jathi are the Regular Accents Over the Gati, or How you Accent Individual Beats within a Series of “Gatis”
– so “Jathi” is a Way of Adding Another Pulse which can be any Number (while the Gati is Fixed to Only Values as 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 etc.)
– i.e. Gati is the Grid Division (similar to DAW Grid) and Jathi is / are any Beat/s within that Grid Space (similar to DAW Ticks)
Common used “GATIS”
TISRA = 3/4 – Spelled as TA KI TE
CHATUSRA = 4/16 – Spelled as TA KE DI MI
KHANDA = 5/16 – Spelled as TA KE GHI NA TON
TISRA 2nd Speed = 6/4 – Spelled as TA KI TE TA KI TE (you also may divide by 4+2 or 2+4, we use 3+3 here which is Double the TISRA)
MISRA = 7/8 – Spelled as TA KE DI MI TA KI TE (you also may divide by 3+4, 5+2 or 2+5, we use 4+3 here which is CHATUSRA + then TISRA)
Example Ratios Achieved with Gati and Jathi
Example One: 3 = Gati / 4 = Jathi
– we make a Jathi of 4 vs a TISRA (Triplet) which will then Fulfil the 3/4 Time Signature
– in other Words 3 Total Accents against 4 Metronome Clicks in 4 TISRA Patterns, means take always the Next 4th Beat and Accent it (finally 3 x 4 = 12 for a Full Cycle)
1) Decide what Gati (here we take Triplets)
2) Decide how many Bars / Patterns to Setup the Speed first (here we make 4)
3) Then we gonna Replace the 3 Silbel Group with the 4 Silbel Group (means replace TA KI TE with TA KE DI MI)
4) So draw 4 Patterns of Triplet on a Paper and Mark / Accent every 4th Note to have 3 equally Spaced Accents against 4 equally Spaced Metronome Clicks

5) Listen to Example first counted TiSRA Original to define Tempo, then the Replaced 3rd Silbel Group by a 4th Silbel Group
Example Two: 5 = Gati / 3 = Jathi
– we make a Jathi of 3 vs a KHANDA (5) which will then Fulfil the 5/3 Time Signature
– in other Words 5 Total Accents against 3 Metronome Clicks in 3 KHANDA Patterns, means take always the Next 5th Beat and Accent it (finally 5 x 3 = 15 for a Full Cycle)
1) Decide what Gati (here we take 5)
2) Decide how many Bars / Patterns to Setup the Speed first (here we make 3)
3) Then we gonna Replace the 5 Silbel Group with a 3 Silbel Group (means replace TA KE GHI NA TON with TA KI TE)
4) So draw 3 Times a 5 on a Paper and Mark / Accent every 3rd Note to have 5 equally Spaced Accents against 3 equally Spaced Metronome Clicks

5) Listen to Example first counted KHANDA Original to define Tempo, then the Replaced 5 Silbel Group by a 3 Silbel Group
Example Three : 7 = Gati / 3 = Jathi
– we make a Jathi of 3 vs a MISRA (7) which will then Full-fill the 7/3 Time Signature
– in other Words 7 Total Accents against 3 Metronome Clicks in 3 MISRA Patterns, so you take always the Next 7th Beat and Accent it (finally 3 x 7 = 21 for a Full Cycle)
1) Decide what Gati (here we take 7)
2) Decide how many Bars / Patterns to Setup the Speed first (here we make 3)
3) Then we gonna Replace the 7 Silbel Group with a 3 Silbel Group (means replace TA KE DI MI TA KI TE with TA KI TE)
4) So draw 3 Times a 7 on a Paper and Mark / Accent every 3rd Note to have 7 equally Spaced Accents against 3 equally Spaced Metronome Clicks
