– Measures the “Root Means Squared” of a Signal 

– a Mathematical Way of Expressing the Amount of Energy in a Signal

– Used in Analog & Digital Devices 

– Measures in dBu (as Peak)

– Slow Response with a Integration Time of 50ms

    – Represents an Average of the Total Signal and is Not as Fast as a Peak Meter

    – Intended to Reflect Amount of Energy or How Loud a Signal is

    – Basically the Average Level of a Signal and therefore tells Us How Loud the Music actually is 

      – also for Statistical Measurements of the Overall Volume and Useful for Mastering Purposes

      – Recommendations say a Peak RMS Level should Sit around -20dBFS to -12dBFS 

        – LUFS and RMS are Closely Together, but Unlike “LUFS” the EQ is Not Balanced so RMS is Very Sensitive to the Bass, thus RMS is Never as Accurate in Judging Loudness as the LUFS System which is More Focused on the Midrange Like the Human Hearing Works in Terms of Judging Loudness

        2 Methods of Measuring the RMS Level (via Pink Noise)

        – One of them is specified by AES for Music, the Correct Reading for this Piece of Pink Noise using that System is -11.5dB 

        – Notice that some Meters will come with -14.5dB, depending id used either Sine-wave or Square-wave for Measurement 

        – can be Compensated in most Meters anyway but be aware of that
