Imitation (Form)

– also Known as “Imitative Counterpoint”

– Imitation is Taking a Phrase (or Part of a Phrase) and Giving it to Other Voices either Unison or Freely Transposed

– i.e. the Same Melody Returns in Different Parts of the Piece in Different Voices 

– or “a Repetition of a Melodic Line, but with Each Repetition Entering at Different Times which Creates an Effect of Overlapping

– can be a Melodic Phrase, Rhythmic Phrase or Both

– at least 2 Voices are used but of Course many more Voices could Repeat Phrases

– it is possible to Replay such a Phrase or Part in another Key (often either 5th or 4th below)
