General
– Use a Patch with a High “p” Dynamic Level if you need it louder (not raise the Volume of a ppp Patch for the proper Dynamic)
– Use Mod Wheel (1) for different Dynamic Layers & Expression (11) to Control Volume
Dynamics and there Names
– Dynamics dB are of course relative, but widely used for Orchestral Illustrations
– may differ in Vienna, Berlin or Paris because of different Halls / Recording Studios / Mic Positions / Early Reflections / Number of People etc.
– Cinematic Strings or LASS for Example have ppp 0-21, mp 22-54, f 55-93, fff 94-127

VSL SE Velocity Layers by Midi Note Numbers
– see Info of each Patch in VI Pro for amount of available Layers

This Sheet affects Brass Libraries

Linear Differences
– Instrument Dynamics to handle between different Libraries

How many Woodwinds in Unison it Needs v1
- to equal the “ff” (Fortissimo) Dynamics for each Department of a String Section
- Based on Standard amount of String Players
– means for Violins 1 there can be 3 Woodwinds in Unison playing, Violins 2 = 3 etc.

How many Woodwinds in Unison it Needs v2
- Based on Mahler, Strauss, Wagner
- or later adapted by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky amounts of String Section Players
– here Appassionata String Patches in VSL that is pre-defined for that amount of Players (called Dramatic Sized String Section)

Dynamic Equivalents
– as Volume increases there is less Equality between individual Instruments & Sections
– this forces you to understand the Blending of Instruments in Unison and other Combinations at varying Level so the Orchestra is balanced, Based on:
Violins 1 = 12 Players
Violins 2 = 10 Players
Violas = 8 Players
Cellos = 6-8 Players
Basses = 2-3 Players
What Woodwinds Meet the String Sections in each Department
– Based on last 120 Years
- to manage the Dynamics from Violins 1 in a Standard Sized String Section to a Dramatic Sized String Sections “pp” all up to “ff” (Art Not Science)
