Most important Reverb Parameters for Depth and Space

in

General

  • Shape (or Attack and Size), Pre Delay and Size
  • Notice that “Delay Time” is Not Important but Rather a Taste if You Like Long Reverbs or Short Reverbs
  • Use Damping and Bass Multiplier etc. to Your Benefit to e.g. Adapt Voice Reverb Bass to a Acoustic Bass Line or Keep Bass Away in the Voice Reverb, Same Goes for Damping and High Frequency Reverb Options, Remember that Damping Affects the Decay / Reverb Time of the Reverb while the EQ Only Applies Equalization to the Input and / or Output Part of the Reverb
  • Development of the Reverb (i.e. Quasi Envelope Shape)

Shape

  • Shape Parameter in a Reverb is Very (Probably Most) Important
  • Shape = What Happens with the Attack After a Signal Comes in the Reverb, Does the Reverb Come Right Away or Does the Reverb Fade In / Builds Up Slowly?
  • Shape Setting also Emphasizes the Effect of the Pre Delay
  • e.g. Short Attack will Make the Reverb Appear Immediately and Make the Voice Further Away Whereas a Longer Attack Lets the Original Initial Transients Through and Fades the Reverb into the Voice

Pre Delay

  • Onset of Reverberation, i.e. a Gap Between the Dry Signal and the Reverb
  • Works Together with the Shape, i.e. Shape and Pre Delay are the Keypoint to Set the Distance between Objects or to have Something Close while Still have Long Reverbs

– Dettwiler Refers High Pre Delays to Keep Original Signal Clear (50ms to 80ms or Higher)

Size

  • you can have a Toilet Reverb or a Church Reverb
  • Small Size Parameters Mimic a Small Sized Room / Close Walls
  • Large Sized Rooms Makes Sounds more Generous / Gorgeous
  • Bricasti the “Size” Parameter Does Not Change Too Much
  • Lexicon Mimics More the In-Between Reflections, e.g. the Bigger the Room the More Reflections Build up on Each Other (Lexicon Size = Shape Parameter and Contour = Size Parameter)

ER / Diffusion

  • In the Old Days No CPU Could Manage the xxx Early Reflections Appear in Nature, so they Simulated it with ER Parameter that can Add Some Reflections
  • e.g. Lets Produce 20 Real Reflections to Mimic Distance of a Stage that Come Before the Actual Reverb
  • Today you can Shape the ER / Diffusion and Use it to Make the Reverb Sound Clearer by Adjusting the Early and Late Reflections
