- This Applies to Control Basses in Genres Using Heavy Low Basses
- it is About Serial Compression, i.e. Compress at 2 to 4 Instances, e.g. on Track Level then on Group Level then on Mixbus Level
- of Course Serial Compression is also Effective on Vocals or Drums etc.
Insert 1st Compressor (No Make Up Gain from Start)
1) Ratio 4:1
2) Hard Knee
3) Threshold for 5dB – 10dB of GR
4) Now Compensate with Make Up
5) Set Release to Medium Release or Auto Release
6) Adjust Attack, Make Attack Aggressive / Too Far so you Hear the Bass Getting Dull and then Back Off a Bit
7) Fine Tune Release, Start at 100ms and Increase for Longer Sustained Bass Notes
- i.e. Look that the Meter Slowly Goes Back while the Note Sustains in Order to Give the Note More Power (a Fast Release Would Not Consider the Sustained Note)
Insert 2nd Compressor
1) Duplicate the First Compressors Settings
2) May be Too Much Compression Now, so Back off the 2nd Compressors Threshold until there is Only About 5dB of GR
Bass Saturation
1) Finally Check Optimal Bass Level by Simply Turning Up / Down Bass Volume Fader
2) Then Use Saturation on the Upper Part of the Bass Only to Make the Bass Cut Through More (i.e. Don’t Saturate the Lowest Notes)
