Mixing with Perspective

General

– the Same is Sound Coming from the Same Direction, Over and Over, Gets Imprinted in the Brain so you Mean that’s the Right Way to Hear it

– a Solution is to Simply Stop at a Certain Time and Get Away for 10 Minutes (or a Day), but there are Other Solutions to Shift the Perspective “On the Fly”

Other Solutions

1) Close Your Eyes, Listen and Make Sure the Initial Step is Well Thought

– i.e. What is the Problem and What Do i Need to Address First?

  • Einstein Said “If i am Left with 30 Minutes to Save the World, i Think 25 Minutes What the Problem is and then Solve it in 5 Minutes”

2) Ask Yourself “How can i Get there with the Fewest Things Possible”?

  • But Stop Fiddle Around and Hope Something will Work Out

3) Have Multiple Monitors Placed Differently and / or Multiple Headphones to Shift the Acoustics

4) Look Down to the Floor to Hear High Frequency Transients Better

5) If you can Not Detect Where an Instrument Actually is (How Loud it is / If you Should Pan to Left or Right etc.), Stare at 1 Speaker and Try to See the Instrument to Better Judge the Best Step for that Instrument

6) Swap the Left and Right Channel on the Master to Hear the Left Channel Coming from the Right Speaker (and Viceversa)

– this is a Top Tip

– i.e. as Soon as you Inverse the Channels or Change the Listening Position / Environment you Might Get a Total Off / Different Picture

7) Place a Monitor Behind You to Shift the Listening Experience

8) Get Out of the Sweet Spot

9) Use Polar Analyzer to Display Position if Instruments and Consequently Better Place Instruments

10) At 85dB SPL we are Able to Hear Very Linear (i.e. Biggest Peaks Hitting 85dB SPL, Using Slow and C-Weighted Method)

– but Since 85dB SPL is Very Loud, Use Your Own SPL and Finish the Mix at Volume and Learn from the Results

– i.e. You Probably Lose Focus to Mix Bass and High Frequencies as Good as Mid Range Since Lower SPL is No More as Linear as 85dB SPL

11) If you Done some Initial Processing, Listen and Compare a Quiet Long Passage for Quiet Some Time (10 – 60 Seconds) and Figure Out if it is Better

– When you A/B vs Reference or vs a Previous Mix, Press the A/B Switch Very Fast with Closed Eyes so you Forget What the Original vs Treated is (Real Blind Test)

– and Make Sure Original vs Treated is Level Matched
