Match Low End Crossover

General

– Matching the Low End is Critical to Any Song, i.e. you Should Rather have a Solid Low End than a Fantastic Performance

– Distortion on the Bass Often Ruins the Mix

– the Solution is to Separate the Sub to Low Mid to 2 Different Tracks and Treat Them Differently, i.e. Sub Track vs Grit Track

– Get Low Mids Under Control and Identify the Crossover Point is Key, i.e. if you Push the Crossover to Far there Might be a Gap, if you Push the Crossover to Close to the Bass Again you might have the initial Problem of Undefined Low End 

Workflow

1) Identify Muddy Low Mids 

    2) Separate Bass Track onto 2 Tracks to Treat Them Differently 

    • i.e. 1 Track to Treat Subs and 1 to Treat Low Mids

    3) Start with Sub Only and Add a 24dB High Cut Filter to Cut Everything but the Sub Tail and Its Fundamental

    – will be Around 90Hz to 100Hz

    – Optionally Smash Sub onto a Limiter (About -6dB)

    4) Now Solo the Grit Track and Add a Bass Amp or Any Kind of Distortion Tool to Add Harmonics

    – Start to Do that with the EQ Yet Off Just to Check / Listen to the Amp with Original Sub Information to Hear the Amount of Distortion Unwanted for the Sub Part

    5) Now Play Sub also and Add a 36dB Low Cut to the Grit Track and Start Sweep Up (from the Already Defined Sub Crossover Frequency)

    – Listen for the Sweet Spot to Set the Crossover Frequency, e.g. the Sub is No More Distorting

    – will be Around 400Hz to 500Hz

    – if you Push the Crossover to Close to the Bass Again you might have the initial Problem of Undefined Low End 

    6) Now Add Other Instruments to Check if Both, the Sub and / or the Grit Crossover Need Fine Tune
