Clipper Suggestions

in

1) Hard Clip Spikes on Percussive Material

  • e.g. on Snares can be 7dB – 8dB of Clipping, but also Hi Hats
  • if you Need More Snap then Throw a 1176 After the Clipper but Before the Transient Designer as Transients are Emphasized with Equal Level Energy Because Random Spikes have been Clipped and Compressed

2) Hard Clip Guitar Pick Attack and String Noises with Frequency Dependent Clippers

3) For Everything Else Use Soft Clippers to Slightly Enhance the Harmonic Content

  • i.e. for RMS Related Stuff
  • Especially Bass Heavy Material is More Something for Soft Clipping or then have a Multiband Clipper Where the Lowest Range is Soft Clipping and the Other Bands May Hard Clip

4) Use Clippers at Any Stage to Optimize the End Result, i.e. May Clip a Individual Track / Subgroup / Mix Buss / Master

  • e.g. Standard Hard Clip with 16x OS on Mixbus, or Standard Soft Clip with 4x OS on Kick or Bass
