Set Compressor Attack and Release According to BPM

in
  • Remember, to Know What ms Comes Close to Set Attack / Release, Divide 60´000 : Actual BPM (60000ms = 1 Minute)
  • BPM Matching (Groove) is More About the Release than the Attack, but Both Benefit
  • e.g. 60000 : 125BPM = 480ms for 1/4 Notes (i.e. Kick or Every Other Snare), or 240ms for 1/8 Notes (HiHat), or 120ms for 1/16 Notes (Closed Hats), or 60ms for 1/32 Notes

1) Increase Attack and Release to the Maximum, i.e. Slowest Attack and Slowest Release

    2) Set Compressor to Hard Knee, Ratio can About 2:1

    3) Lower Threshold Until you See Significant GR Such as -12dB

    4) Raise the Attack to About 60ms, i.e. you Should Hear the Transient of the Kick Gets Louder and Louder Relative to the Rest of the Signal since the First ms of the Kick Does Not Get Compressed, i.e. at 60ms the Initial Transients Still Cut Through while Every Sound that Lasts Longer than 60ms Gets Compressed

    5) Now Set Release to Desired BPM Calculated ms, e.g. Just Under 1/4 (Around 480ms) or Just Under 1/8 (Around 240ms), you Should Hear the Mix Pump as a Result of the Release Setting as the Release Dictates when the Compressor Release the Volume Back to Normal

    6) Once the Groove Feels Right, Go for -1dB to -3dB of GR and Compensate Make Up Accordingly to match Dry Signal
