5 Mastering Tips

in

1) Use Headphones to Compare Against Monitor

      • Because of the Smaller Membrane a HP can Make Distortions Better Audible
      • also the Room Acoustics Do Not Matter when Using HP
      • a lot of Engineers Work More with Open HP

      2) Remember that Pushing an EQ at Master Stages Pushes Each Component in that Area

      • therefore if you Need More than 3dB whilst Mastering to Make a Distinctive Element to Sit where you Want it, Go Back to the Mix and Do it there (thus Do Not Increase More than 3dB in Mastering as it also Affects Everything Else)
      • Also Consider Stem Mastering as you can Work on Particular Groups of Components

      3) Use References

      • this also Ensures you Do Not Mix / Master into the Sky and End Up with an Unbalanced Mix / Master
      • also to Compare the Differences at Equal LUFS

      4) When Master your Own Sound Consider Others Help

      • you have Printed a Certain Sound into your Brain by Knowing Own Productions already, thus you are No More Neutral
      • Use External Help and Equipment / Locations

      5) Listen and Check the Master if All is How you Meant it to Be

      • Do Not Lose Concentration Over the Last Meters
