– Uses Always 1 Low Kick (Bass Feeling) and 1 High Kick (EQ to Attack)
– Advises One to Use a Kick that Works Over and Over in the Beginning (Uses the Same Over 2 Years)
– Next Level is to Use Always the Same High Kick and Tune the Low Kick to the Key of the Track
– has a Ready Routed Template with a Short Reverb, a Long Reverb, a Delay, a Chorus
– Template also has a Long Kick, a Medium Kick and a Short Kick
– the Tail of the Kick Should Finish when the Bass is Starting
– to Cut the Tail of the Kick in Order to Let the Bass Come Through he Inserts Volume Shaper on the Bass and Draws the Volume Curve from Scratch
– he Often Uses a Compressor to Glue Kick and Bass After the Volume Shaper to Make and Feel Kick and Bass as “1 Sound” (you can Only Compress it Good and Hard if they Not Conflict)
– he Sometimes Puts the Reverb Before the Sidechain Compression so the Reverb Adds Life (Sidechain Open = Reverb Open)
– he Mostly Uses Other Elements than a Kick as the Sidechain Trigger (Because a Kick has by Nature a Rather Long Tail which Creates a Longer Trigger Sidechain Phase)
– i.e. he Uses More Short Sounds as a Trigger Source that Even Do Not Belong to the Composition (Just as Sidechain Trigger)
– also the Trigger Point Does Not have to Sit On the “1 1 1 1”, you can Make it Trigger Early which also has the Benefit of a Even More Breathy Kick
– this Way you Quasi Manually Set/Correct Latency and you are Free to a More Creative Sidechain and a Faster Short Sounds = Faster Attack
– Good Sidechaining also Allows for Huge Reverbs that Still Do Not Take up Too Much Space
– His Engineer Does Not Allow Lows Being Reverbed, he Chooses the Most Important Sound (e.g. Pluck / Synth etc.) and Adds Mainly (or Only) a Huge Reverb (Sensation) to the Most Important Sound which Gives a Feel the Reverb is Everywhere and Makes a Song Wide (i.e. Other Sounds can be Free from Reverb but Benefit from that One Huge Reverb)
– If you Don’t Get the Kick and Bass to Sound and Feel Right in EDM you are Wasting Your Time
– “Fat” is Not Necessarily the Lowest Bass Possible, i.e. What Makes You Feel that the Bass is Fat is More Around 80Hz to 120Hz (Body) Whereas the Sub Gives You that Physical Sensation in the Club
– Try to Make the Bass Playing when Kick is Not Playing, Make the Kick and Bass the Right Length (Bass Not Overlap with Kick)
– Decide if the Sub Should Come from the Bassline or Kick, i.e. you can Cut Out the Sub Below 35Hz on the Bass if the Kick Provides Sub or Viceversa
– If the Bass is Long Try a Short Kick and Viceversa, also if the Bass Plays Many Notes Try a Short Kick, also if you Want the Sub Coming from the Bassline and Not the Kick Try a Short Kick
– Try Inverted Sidechain, i.e. Use Bass Duck as Usual and the Copy Duck to the Kick but Invert the Curve, Optionally Adjust Length
– Takes Care About Kick Being in Key with Bass
