Rear Buss Compression

General

– Simply means Dual Mono Compression on the Entire Track but Without Drums and then this Copy of the Mix is Parallel Mixed into the Entire Song

– i.e. Basically a Copy of the Mix Without the Drum and then Parallel Blend this Copy to the Mix to Your Taste

– when Drums are Very Low in Volume you can Include Them

– Bass is Optionally, i.e. Do Rear Bus Compression with Bass and  Listen, Optionally Take it Out

– the Technique per Se Comes from Quadrophonic Days, the Neve Console had a Stereo Rear Buss Channel Fed 2 Monitors in the Back of the Mixer, Andrew Scheps Use that Stereo Rear Buss to Parallel Mix  In the Instrumental (No Drums) to the Entire Mix

– the Idea is to Start Mixing into the Rear Buss Right from the Beginning

Rear Buss Workflow

1) Insert a 1176 Compressor in a Dual Mono Setup on a FX Buss

– i.e. Either Use a Dual Mono Capable Plugin or Setup Cubase Insert to Work as Dual Mono

– you can Use Any Compressor, but the 1176 is a Good Choice for that

– Set it to 2:1, you Need a Special AE Version of a 1176 Compressor that has an Extra 2:1 Ratio

– Don’t Drive Too Hard into Compressor

– About 2dB to 5dB GR

– Use Slowest Attack Possible (Remember in 1176 this means at “1”)

– Use Fast Release Such as “5”

2) Now Send Groups / Stems in Post Fader to the Rear Buss at 100%

– and then Blend In the Rear Buss Channel to Your Like
