– Low Frequency Oscillator
– it is an Electronic Component that Creates Vibrato
– like an Envelope it is a Modulator (Not a Sound Generator) and Designed to Control another Parameter within a Synthesizer
– it is Cycled in Nature (Going Up & Down)
– the LFO is Similar to the Oscillator as it has Wave-Shapes and the Shapes are Similar (Square, Sine, Sawtooth, Noise)
– the Difference between the LFO and an Oscillator is the Rate at which they Run Up
– the “Low” in “Low Frequency Oscillator” means the Range of the LFOs Frequency is Lower than the Range of the Human Hearing (Below 20Hz)
– a Total Range for an LFO to Run at would be from Zero Hz (DC= Direct Current) Up to 100Hz (maybe a little Higher), but the Usual Range it is Used is from “0Hz to 20Hz”
– i.e. we Can Not Actually Hear the LFO, therefore it is only useful to Control something Else
– one of the Most uses of an LFO is to Create an “Vibrato” Effect
– a Singers Vibrato (or Violin Player etc.) has a Pitch Variation (that is also Cyclic in Nature) often Appears at 3KHz to 6KHz
– the LFO is the Perfect Oscillator to Generate this Vibrato Behaviour with an Adjusted Range from 0Hz to 20Hz
