Everything Affects Everything

in
  • No Matter How Small a Change is that you are Making, it Affects Everything
  • thus Always Make Small Moves, Mix Fast, Do Changes in Context of the Overall Picture, e.g. if you Push Something then Pull it Back to Hear What it is  Doing to the Overall Picture
  • e.g. if a Mix is Dull, Reach for the Brightest Element in the Mix and Push it Up 1dB and Listen, or Take Down the Lowest  Element in the Mix and Pull 1dB Down and Listen
  • Try Changes in Contrasting Moves, i.e. Instead Boost / Cut on Only 1 Frequency Spot Do 2 a Change on 2 Frequency Spots by 1dB Each
  • e.g. if the Guitar has Not Enough Bite you Could Crank Up between 2.8kZ and 3.5kHz by 2dB, but you Could Crank Up Only 1dB and Think About Another Technique that will Give the Guitar Its Bite by e.g. Reducing 1dB at 400Hz
  • also have Too Much at 50Hz will Make the Drum Come Through Less, thus Reduce 1dB to 2dB on the 50Hz will Give the Drum More Room
  • or if a Vocal is Not Cutting Through Push it Up at Around 1.8kHz by 1dB, at the Same Time Push the Vocal FX 1dB and Finally Take Down the Vocal Fader to Compensate the Volume (which May also Give the Guitar More Room )
  • and Remember that Making Moves may Reveal Hidden Things which is Not a Bad Thing as the Hidden Things were There Before but Masked
  • also when a Mix is Not Dense Enough, Use a Compressor a Little while Use Saturation a Little Before or After the Compressor
  • Especially with Plugins it May be Better to Use “Many” but with Really Small Changes (Instead a Few with Big Changes)
  • also the 250Hz is Often Masking the 2kHz to 4kHz Area, e.g. for better Vocals Try Dip on Several Instruments / Vocal the 250Hz but Enhance on the Vocal the 2kHz to 4kHz
  • to Reduce Harshness on HiHats Add Tape Saturation or Compress with a Mojo Compressor and then Add Back Top End with an EQ
