General
- this Trick Comes from the NS-10 where a 40Hz Sub Just Could Not be Heard, but the Engineers Knew they can Feel the Right Ball Park by Touching the Woofer Membrane when the Mix is Playing
Workflow
1) Work Out Kick to the Bass
a) Mute the Kick Drum and Play Bass Only
b) Put Your Fingertips Around the Woofer Membrane Ring for About 15 to 30 Seconds
- Do this at a Modest Volume, Not Too Loud Not Too Quiet
- Try to Feel the Exact Movement of the Bass Through the Fingertips
- i.e. Make Sure you can Track the Movement of the Bass Membrane,
- if it is Too Nervous it is Too Much, it Must be Felt Musical, Interesting and Clearly Defined
c) Then Unmute the Kick Drum with the Fingertips Still Touched the Woofer and you will Immediately Hear What is Happening between Kick and Bass
- i.e. if Wrong, you will Feel that the Kick Now Distorts the Groove off the Bass Movement
2) To Fix the Masking, Change Level between EQ of the Kick Until the Kick Enhances the Bass Groove, Makes the Bass Feel Bigger Everyone the Kick Comes and Gives that “Back and Forth” Feeling
- i.e. Make Sure that Whether the Bass Nor the Kick has Too Much Sub Information which Makes it Hard to Get Either One Cut Through
- it is Surprising How Much you can Highpass the Information of the Kick Drum
- Do the Kick HP on the Drum Buss with a 12dB Slope (Sometimes Even Higher Slope), Up to 40Hz / 50Hz (Sometimes Even 60Hz)
- You can Compensate the Loss of Weight in the Kick with a Little Bell Filter Boost on the Boom Character Frequency of the Kick
3) Then Work Out the Bass to the Rest of the Music More Comfortably
