– Add a Note from a Diatonic Scale to a Basic Major or Minor Triad to Create Colour and Interest
– but also to Support a Melody Line that Falls on the 2nd, 4th or 6th Degree
– the Added Tone Must be a Note that Does Not Fall into a Pattern of 3rd from the Root
– so Possible is the 2nd, 4th or 6th Degree of a Diatonic Scale
– Because in “Added” Tone Chords the 3rd Scale Step is Retained = One More Note (Opposite the Suspended Chords where the 3rd Scale Step gets Replaced)
– e.g. Add Note D to a Basic C Triad = C – D – E – G which Makes an C Major Add 2 Chord (or C – D – Eb – G = C Minor Add 2 Chord)
– or Add Note F to a Basic C Triad = C – E – F – G which Makes an C Major Add 4 Chord (or C – Eb – F – G = C Minor Add 4 Chord)
– or Add Note A to a Basic C Triad = C – E – G – A which Makes an C Major Add 6 Chord (or C – Eb – G – A = C Minor Add 6 Chord)
– Notice that Sometimes the Added Note is Intended be Played in the Next Octave, e.g. in a C Major Add 9 = C – D – E – G, the D is from an Octave Higher (i.e. Added 9th, 11th, 13th etc.)
